The Hebrew writer says, "And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a
servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after" (Heb.
3:5). Likewise, "the Spirit saith," "be thou faithful unto death, and I will
give thee a crown of life" (Rev. 2:10). "Moreover it is required in stewards,
that a man be found faithful" (1 Cor. 4:2). "The Lord preserveth the faithful"
(Psa. 31:23). "Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may
dwell with me" (Psa. 101:6).
Faithfulness is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22, 23). It does not imply
sinless perfection. Was Moses sinless? No. Was he "faithful"? God said he was.
Moses was steady, stable, ready and reliable. That is the heart, the essence, of
faithfulness. Through many long years of toils and tears, "Moses was
faithful."
How about me? How about you? Do we sputter and spew and serve God
sporadically? That is not faithfulness. That is inconsistent, hit and miss,
service. Unfaithful service is a service of convenience, not of conviction. It
is a service of selfishness. It says, "I will serve God when I have nothing
better to do, or when I want to do so." What businessman would want an employee
like that? What wife would want a husband like that? What parent would want a
child like that? What teacher would want a student like that? What God would
want a servant like that?
At the Judgment, will God say unto you and me, "Well done, thou good and
faithful servant" (Matt. 25:21)?
