The Bible has a lot to say about laziness, slothfulness, and idleness, and
none of it is complimentary (Prov. 15:19; 19:24; 22:13; 26:13-16). God has said,
"If any would not work, neither should he eat" (2 Thess. 3:10). One who is too
lazy to work or who otherwise refuses to provide for his family "hath denied the
faith, and is worse than an infidel" (1 Tim. 5:8).
Laziness has reached epidemic proportions in America. Too many are simply
unwilling to work. A part of this trend lies in the fact that we are cursed with
our blessings. First, children do not learn to work because they do not have to
do so. There is no wood to cut and haul in. We have automatic heating systems
and stoves. There is no water to draw and carry in. It comes out of our faucets.
Second, though there is work that young people can do, many are not taught to
work. They are not given duties and responsibilities. They are not shown how to
function, nor are they instilled with a sense of pride in a job well done.
Parents, this is one of your obligations! Teach your children to work! It
need not be an unpleasant experience. Train them. Use wisdom; be patient with
them. Praise and encourage them in their efforts. Make them learn this divine
principle: "He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the
diligent maketh rich. He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that
sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame" (Prov. 10:4, 5). Mom and Dad,
if you do not teach them these things, a part of that "shame" will fall upon you
(Prov. 10:1).
