"Is Education the Answer?"

Larry Ray Hafley

Our country is beset and besieged with numerous problems--drug use, broken homes, unwed mothers and fathers. The list is endless. Many politicians believe the answer is improved education. Many problems will dissipate and disappear if we educate our youth.

Is this true? If so, to what degree? Are educated people immune to drug addiction, broken homes, and immoral behavior? Obviously not!

The answer is not math, science, history and English. The moral and spiritual education of the soul and spirit is what is needed. If knowledge found in books and in Internet libraries was the answer, the Lord would have said, "I will build my university." He would have said, "Go ye into all the world and preach a liberal arts education to all the nations."

God has made foolish the wisdom of this world (1 Cor. 1:18-21). Our nation's experience agrees with this affirmation. We are, perhaps, the best educated, the most highly trained and skilled culture that has ever existed. We have access to more information than any era in history. Yet, we have raised a generation of moral morons. Despite our educational emphasis, spiritual ignorance abounds. Character, integrity and principled behavior are victims of a humanistic system gone mad. Result? Police are in school hallways and eleven year olds are shooting one another in the streets over a pair of sneakers.

If one would be truly wise, let him become a fool in the eyes of the world (1 Cor. 3:18-21). However, today, those who have "doctorates in degeneracy" are dispatching diplomas of depravity. Homosexual AIDS victims, Hollywood whores, and Prime Time TV drug addicts are celebrated like returning war heroes used to be. This is not wisdom. It is not education. It is a blot, a blight; it is the dunces of indecency that now run many of our sterile, morally neutral values systems.

Yes, genuine education is the answer. It is in the school of Christ--"Take my yoke upon you and learn of me" (Matt. 11:28-30). "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom" (Col. 3:16). In Christ are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col. 3:2). Seek after divine wisdom as you would for fine gold (Prov. 2:4-14). It will educate you with the only knowledge that really matters.
