Paul told Timothy to give attention to "reading" (1 Tim. 4:13). By reading
the Scriptures, we gain understanding of the will of the Lord (Eph. 3:4;
5:17).
Too many of us do not read enough, or if we do, we read the wrong things.
Whether it be about sports, politics, or a favorite hobby, we find time to read
what we are interested in reading. Are spiritual things in that list? Do we find
time to feed our souls on the word of God? If we can read about golf, gardening,
farming, football, or our favorite pastime, can we not find time to read that
which will nourish and nurture our souls?
Generally, what we know about, we have read about. This is true in eternal
matters, too. We are ignorant of that which we do not read. I know nothing about
interior decorating. I have not read about it. I know nothing about the latest
Hollywood movie or the newest fashion fad. I have not read about them. Is there
a correlation between my knowledge and what I read? Of course, there is.
So, it is with you and your knowledge of the word of God. Resolve now to read
the Bible. Subscribe to bulletins, papers, and magazines that teach the word of
God and read them with care. The rest is up to you.
